Hawaii Game

It is FINALLY that time of year.  The college football season officially starts tomorrow, 9/1!  We open our schedule on Saturday against Hawaii.  I'm really excited for this season to kickoff.  The Jon Embree era needs to get off to a good start and beating Hawaii is the perfect way to do it.  My job has taken a different role since school began, considering I cannot be in the office as much.  My main task lately has been recruiting, recruiting, and recruiting.  I love it, too!  This is exactly what I hoped for when I signed up.  This is giving me great experience for when I want to recruit athletes as an agent.  I think we have a great chance to win.  Our D will be the biggest issue since we are starting 2 new CBs against the pass-happy Hawaii offense.  I'm confident in our coaching and players.  How do you think we will do??

Moving

Well, it is that time of year.  Time for the students of Boulder to move out of old places and into new ones.  Peter and I are moving to a new townhouse.  We're leaving James to live with the Tylers.  Our new place has a huge living room area, which is a nice change to what we had the past 2 years.  Peter and I picked up a great couch from the Salvation Army store...it's super comfy.  We figured that Tyler needs a comfy place when he sleeps over.  We also bought a coffee table and dining table with 4 chairs from IKEA.  Both were great deals and look great with our new setup.  We have a pool in our new place which we are excited about.  Our balcony overlooks it and has a great view of the Flatirons.  I'm off to go move more stuff...pictures to come later.

My Job

Around the same time that I was applying for the BOS Certificate Program, I was hired by CU Football to be a Student Assistant.  I could not do much work for them during June and July, because of the BOS Certificate Program, but I am now fully immersed in it, and I love it! I am our Defensive Coordinator's assistant, but I pretty much do work for anyone on the defense.

Yesterday I jumped right into my first day with a defensive staff meeting.  It was great to see how the team's staff and how they work together before camp.  I spent most of it putting together ~75 defensive binders with plays and formations for the defensive players and coaches.  While it was boring work, it was still fun being around the players and coaches.  My favorite player on the team so far = Anthony Perkins.  Really nice guy and knows what he's doing.  Hope he has a great year.

Today, I sat in on another meeting, and watched tons of game film.  We watched the Oregon - Cal game, which is a great game to watch.  The Cal D gave it their all and just came up short.  We also watched some USC - UA film.  Our DC was at UA last year so we were watching his schemes against USC.  I, along with a fellow Student Assistant, also got briefed on how to identify offensive formations.  We're tasked with looking at our practice tape, and future opponents' game tapes and say what formation was used when and whatnot.  I'm really excited for that and look forward to being able to spit out formations whenever I watch a play. 

Camp starts on Thursday.  More to come later.

My Summer

I promise I will try to update this more.  Here is a rundown of my summer:

I was accepted into the CU Business of Sports Certificate Program which started in June and ended in late July.  This has been the best experience I have had while at CU.  We talked sports for 7 hours a day, every day.  It was awesome.  We discussed sport management, sports marketing, sports law, economics of sports, and leadership.  Since my dream is to become a sports agent, this class was perfect for me.  I met two great sports agents, Jack and Tom Mills.  Jack's wife grew up in San Marino, so that was an instant connection we had.  I plan on keeping in touch with him frequently.

The main part of the class was a huge project that groups had to do for various Colorado-based sports organizations.  The partners were CU Athletics, Denver Broncos, Denver Nuggets, Colorado Rapids, Vail Resorts, and Greenhouse Scholars.  The organization I was assigned to was CU.  My group, which was by far the best group, had to improve CU's social media standing (mostly Facebook and Twitter).  It was a fairly easy project compared to the others, but we did an awesome job with it.  Here is my group while at INVESCO:

And we also visited CU's Folsom Field.  All the field trips were awesome and we got to hear from some great guest speakers. 

One of the best parts about being with everyone for 7 hours a day for 2 months straight is the friendships that are built.  I made some great, new friends that I'll always stay in touch with.  If anyone reading this is interested in the business side of sports, I highly recommend you apply for this program.  Easily one of the best decisions I have made in my short life.
