Success

I got this video from my boy Taylor Horowitz.  It is so inspirational.  Exactly the thing I was looking for at this point in my life.

When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, then you will be successful.

Hawaii Game

It is FINALLY that time of year.  The college football season officially starts tomorrow, 9/1!  We open our schedule on Saturday against Hawaii.  I'm really excited for this season to kickoff.  The Jon Embree era needs to get off to a good start and beating Hawaii is the perfect way to do it.  My job has taken a different role since school began, considering I cannot be in the office as much.  My main task lately has been recruiting, recruiting, and recruiting.  I love it, too!  This is exactly what I hoped for when I signed up.  This is giving me great experience for when I want to recruit athletes as an agent.  I think we have a great chance to win.  Our D will be the biggest issue since we are starting 2 new CBs against the pass-happy Hawaii offense.  I'm confident in our coaching and players.  How do you think we will do??

Here's a pic I snapped the other day while working.  Go Buffs!!

Moving

Well, it is that time of year.  Time for the students of Boulder to move out of old places and into new ones.  Peter and I are moving to a new townhouse.  We're leaving James to live with the Tylers.  Our new place has a huge living room area, which is a nice change to what we had the past 2 years.  Peter and I picked up a great couch from the Salvation Army store...it's super comfy.  We figured that Tyler needs a comfy place when he sleeps over.  We also bought a coffee table and dining table with 4 chairs from IKEA.  Both were great deals and look great with our new setup.  We have a pool in our new place which we are excited about.  Our balcony overlooks it and has a great view of the Flatirons.  I'm off to go move more stuff...pictures to come later.

My Job

Around the same time that I was applying for the BOS Certificate Program, I was hired by CU Football to be a Student Assistant.  I could not do much work for them during June and July, because of the BOS Certificate Program, but I am now fully immersed in it, and I love it! I am our Defensive Coordinator's assistant, but I pretty much do work for anyone on the defense.

Yesterday I jumped right into my first day with a defensive staff meeting.  It was great to see how the team's staff and how they work together before camp.  I spent most of it putting together ~75 defensive binders with plays and formations for the defensive players and coaches.  While it was boring work, it was still fun being around the players and coaches.  My favorite player on the team so far = Anthony Perkins.  Really nice guy and knows what he's doing.  Hope he has a great year.

Today, I sat in on another meeting, and watched tons of game film.  We watched the Oregon - Cal game, which is a great game to watch.  The Cal D gave it their all and just came up short.  We also watched some USC - UA film.  Our DC was at UA last year so we were watching his schemes against USC.  I, along with a fellow Student Assistant, also got briefed on how to identify offensive formations.  We're tasked with looking at our practice tape, and future opponents' game tapes and say what formation was used when and whatnot.  I'm really excited for that and look forward to being able to spit out formations whenever I watch a play.

Camp starts on Thursday.  More to come later.

My Summer

I promise I will try to update this more.  Here is a rundown of my summer:

I was accepted into the CU Business of Sports Certificate Program which started in June and ended in late July.  This has been the best experience I have had while at CU.  We talked sports for 7 hours a day, every day.  It was awesome.  We discussed sport management, sports marketing, sports law, economics of sports, and leadership.  Since my dream is to become a sports agent, this class was perfect for me.  I met two great sports agents, Jack and Tom Mills.  Jack's wife grew up in San Marino, so that was an instant connection we had.  I plan on keeping in touch with him frequently.

The main part of the class was a huge project that groups had to do for various Colorado-based sports organizations.  The partners were CU Athletics, Denver Broncos, Denver Nuggets, Colorado Rapids, Vail Resorts, and Greenhouse Scholars.  The organization I was assigned to was CU.  My group, which was by far the best group, had to improve CU's social media standing (mostly Facebook and Twitter).  It was a fairly easy project compared to the others, but we did an awesome job with it.  Here is my group while at INVESCO:

We also took some cool field trips.  Here we all are at INVESCO Field:

Here we are at Coors Field:

Here we are at the Pepsi Center:

And we also visited CU's Folsom Field.  All the field trips were awesome and we got to hear from some great guest speakers.

One of the best parts about being with everyone for 7 hours a day for 2 months straight is the friendships that are built.  I made some great, new friends that I'll always stay in touch with.  If anyone reading this is interested in the business side of sports, I highly recommend you apply for this program.  Easily one of the best decisions I have made in my short life.

This is really cool.  Thanks again to Yahoo!

Homes of Athletes

My favorite is probably Kournikova's house.  Really classy.

Highway Knowledge

This is a really cool video.  I had no idea what went into naming highways...now I do!

Update: My Life

Well, it certainly has been a while since I updated this thing.  Here is a quick rundown on my life since I last posted:
  •  School ended - I got decent grades
  •  Maymester started - waking up at 8am every day has been rough
  • I am a huge sports fan and just noticed today that the MLB logo could either be a right-handed batter, or a left-handed batter depending on how you choose to look at it.

Here is the logo:

I never put much thought into whether it was a left or right-handed batter until now.  It is mind-blowing.  My personal position is that it is a right-handed batter.  Maybe that is because I am a right-handed batter.  Who knows?  We, the ones that look at it, can see it as looking at this guy's back as he waits to swing (right-handed).  But, we can also see it as looking directly at a left-handed batter, right at his face.  Interesting, right?

Griffith

There was a big enough break in the rain yesterday for me to give Melissa a mini tour of Los Angeles.  She's so LA now.  First the Lakers game, then lunch at Urth Caffe, and then hit up Rodeo Drive.  I'm pretty sure I have convinced her to move to LA now.

After those fun things, the skies were clearing and it turned out to be a really pretty day.  I decided to show her the view of LA from Griffith Observatory.  The skies over the West side were dark and covered, while the skies over downtown and more East were nice and clear.  It was pretty pretty.

Right after that last picture was taken it started to pour.  I had to put the camera away in its safe and dry bag.  But before I did, I managed to snap this picture:

It's nothing special.  I actually wish it was a video because Melissa was making weird noises and skipping away from the rain.  The rain won.  Ask her hair.

I'll be back at night soon Griffith.  Until then...

Lakeshow

The Lakers are awesome.  Ever since I can remember I have watched and loved the Lakers.  My favorite player growing up was Nick Van Exel.  He was so good.  Or at least I thought so.  Since about '99 though, my favorite player has been Kobe Bryant.  Kobe is the kind of player that if you aren't from LA that means you probably hate him.  Is it hate?  I just think everyone else is mad that they do not have a Kobe Bryant on their team.

Anyway, I went with my parents and Melissa to see their Sunday night game against the Portland Trail Blazers at STAPLES Center.  I love going to their games.  The atmosphere is always so exciting.  And Sunday night might have been the best Lakers game I have seen in person.  I know it was only a regular season game, but they needed a win without Bynum and it helped establish themselves in 2nd place in the Western Conference.  Also, Kobe took over in the 4th.  It was a classic closing performance from him.  Even the clutch Derek Fisher hit a huge shot to seal the deal at the end.

Enjoy the photos:

Mr. Whittier Christian

My cousin Mark goes to Whittier Christian High School.  They have this thing called "Mr. Whittier Christian" where guys compete in a number of areas to be crowned the winner.  Mark was entered in this competition and so the whole family made the trip to see how he would do.

I was sitting with Melissa, Ali, and Ali's boyfriend.  Also at the table were some of Mark's friend and a special lady friend of Mark's.  They served Chcik-fil-A and fruit punch for dinner during the introductions.

After introductions, they started the night off with a beach ware category.  Mark, with inspiration from my dad, was a Navy SEAL.

The crowd loved it.  But who doesn't love Navy SEALs?  Terrorists probably.  And Somali pirates.  Anyway, the next part of the night featured sportswear.  Mark went with a different style than the rest and went with a polo getup.

After the sportswear section, it was time for the Herald-wear section (they are the Heralds).  Mark came out in his letterman jacket which is covered in cross country patches.  Pretty cool.

After the Herald-wear part, there was a talent portion.  Mark and a friend decided to dance as their talent.  Mark is a really sick dancer and the crowd loved him.  He makes Tyler look like the worst dancer in the world.  I didn't get any pics of that though since it was really dark.  Anyway, after that it was time for the formal wear and time to escort their mothers down the catwalk.  This is the part where all the moms start crying and the boys confess their loves to their moms.  It got kinda cheesy.

Mark did not end up winning "Mr. Whittier Christian," but he did win "Mr. Congeniality."  All around it was a fun night and good to see my family over break.  Good job, Mark!

St. Patrick's Day

So Thursday was a nice day: St. Patrick's Day, NCAA Tournament, and the first day of Spring Break for me.  Only went to one class and came home from that class with 5 girls partying on our balcony.  My first instinct was to say "Ah, hell no!"  I then got bribed to open the door and so the festivities carried on.  Later in the night, Melissa and some people came over to start our night.  Beards, Kelly, and Big Ben were sporting their green and ready to get on with the night.

Beards was really into posing.  She went from pose to pose:

She thinks she's really cool.

This was also the first time we hung out with Beards in a long time.  So, that was a nice change of pace.  Rebounding from a forgettable weekend, Ben was back to business.  He was playing ABBA like no other and the camera loved him.

And the best part of the night, or at least of what my camera captured, was Melissa dancing to "Achy Breaky Heart" by Billy Ray Cyrus.

She's the best. And super silly.  And I don't think we'll be seeing her on any dancing shows anytime soon.  Sorry, Melissa.  Hope everyone else enjoyed their St. Patrick's Day as well!  Now on Spring Break at home.

A Look Back: Saturday Night

I had an eventful night on Saturday.  Here is how it went:

I was downstairs in 110 when I heard this huge shattering sound come from the alley.  Melissa and her friend, Kelly, were just walking up the hall to get me and go to a party.  They said they saw a wine bottle fly from the top level and it looked like it hit either my car or the car next to me.  I ran over to check on my car and sure enough...my car's rear, driver-side window was shattered.  Tinted glass covered the ground next to my car.  Anyone who knows me knows that you don't mess with me or my cars.  I was fine when my neighbor scratched my car because it was an honest accident that got fixed quickly.  This was totally different.  Some idiot threw a bottle and it smashed my window.  Was it deliberate?  Was there malicious intent?  Who knows...

I see this dude in the alley at the time when I run outside and then he starts walking away.  I sprint down the alleyway (making Usain Bolt look slow).  I come to the guy and he tells me he didn't do it and it was someone from upstairs.  I thanked him and Usain Bolted it back to the complex and ran up the stairs to the only place I knew would be harboring someone dumb enough to throw a bottle off the balcony and hit a car...my car.  216.  More specifically, wherever Tyler was.  He just happened to be in 216.

I get to 216 and try to open their ALWAYS unlocked door.  And it's locked.  Suspicion just got raised by 10000%.  So I knock and knock and Peter opens the door.  I ask them to please tell me if one of them threw a bottle off the balcony.  No one answers.  I asked them again to tell me if someone threw a bottle off the balcony.  They said none of them did it.

Another thing about me: I HATE being lied to.  It's the most annoying thing in the world.  I would never expect my friends to lie to me when I was being serious with them and wanted a straight answer.  They lied.

As I'm walking down the hallway about to interrogate the other apartments, my good ol' buddy Tyler McKnight, followed closely by Peter and James, yells my name.  He comes up to me and told me he did it.  I thought he was being a jackass and was kidding.  Not the case.  He actually did it.

Everything after that is not important.  Tyler had to call my dad yesterday and talk it over.  Tyler said they had a nice chat.  He's clearly paying for everything.  Situation resolved.

Lesson learned: If you are gonna get your car window smashed, have your friend do it so you can make them pay for it.

(PICS COMING!)

Mondays

I woke up today after spending 3 hours in the library last night and went to the bathroom.  While in the bathroom, I realized it was only Monday.  Usually, I will be aware about the day of the week.  Today was different.  Maybe because I'm dreading everything I have to do this week.

Monday night: Meet with presentation group.

Tuesday day: Take BLaw test.
Tuesday night: Business of Sports meeting and prepare for Wednesday presentation.

Wednesday day: Present our presentation
Wednesday night: Group meeting for three hours.  I am forced to miss the Buffs NIT opener.  Don't get me started on how we didn't get picked for the big dance.

Thursday: St. Patrick's Day and the REAL start of the NCAA Tournament!  One of the greatest days of the year.  Will not be attending class that day.

Friday: Go home to LA with Melissa!!! SPRING BREAK!!

Sooo, I'm Back

So where have I been and what have I been up to since my last post?  I'll tell you.

So since mid-January, I have watched the Packers win the Super Bowl!!!!!  That was a great game and an awesome experience watching my favorite team win it all.  We had a packed house at our place, and thanks to some additional seating, everyone fit!

The Super Bowl was followed by a showing of Indian and the Cupboard!  One of my favorite movies of my childhood.  It was every bit as good as I remember it.

Melissa and I made cookies one night.

These were so good!  We make a pretty good team.

After the cookie making, I had some tests and a paper due.  One paper was for my Sustainable Operations class.  We had to interview a business and see if they were running their business sustainably, or not.  I decided to call up Tesla Motors because they have those all-electric sports cars.  There is a Tesla dealership here in Boulder, so on a lovely Wednesday morning, I went over and conducted my interview.

The paper went pretty well, the dealership was not sustainable AT ALL.  So while that let me down, it opened my eyes.  And hey, if it doesn't make you money...why would you do it?

Then, it started to snow.  I was tired of being stuck inside with freezing temperatures, so I took a couple pics.

Hey, Tyler.  How's the snow?

And one of the other great things that happened in my absence: Valentine's Day.  Now that I have a girlfriend, Valentine's Day means a little more than it used to in past years.  I went all romantic and decided to cook her dinner and dessert!  Call me Chef David.  It was really good.  I surprised myself.  Melissa even said it was good...who knows if she is telling the truth though.  I didn't take any pics of the meal though because I was too busy making/eating it.  Here are some pics.  Isn't she pretty?

BEAT BOSTON!

Here's hoping I update this more frequently!  Later

Tramon Williams

Tramon Williams Article

This guy is a beast.  Packers got this kid, out of Lousiana Tech, on the Free Agent market.  Paid him some millions and then BOOM...instant return on investment.  I really like this guy.  Clay Matthews, Charles Woodson, Tramon Williams.  The leaders of a Super Bowl bound team.

GO PACK GO!

Rules of Engagement

My sister got engaged over Christmas break!  Special times.  It seems everyone knew it was coming.  Except my sister.  John, the groom-to-be, took her to Old Town Pasadena, where they first met.  Took her to the exact spot, I think, and got down on a knee and did his thing.  I was in the Apple store riding some waves on a Billabong game and I got pitted, so pitted.  Then she called me, we met up with them, gave hugs and handshakes, and then drove home to tell the parents the grand news.  And then it was time to take out a camera:

The future John and Mariann Matson.  The wedding is being planned for June 2012.  I'll be there.  Will you?  (Probably not)
